Nanjing Union Theological Seminary (NJTUS), the national seminary chartered by China Christian Council and National Committee of Three-Self Patriotic Movement, cultivates preachers, pastors for churches, seminary teachers, and theological researchers for the Chinese church. The mission of NJUTS is to nurture church personnel who love their church and their country, who insist on the Three-Self principles (self-governing, self-supporting and self-propagating), who have an integrated development in spiritual, intellectual, physical and social domain, who have made great achievements in spirituality and theology, and who are good at uniting believers, willing to serve the church and the society.
Eleven seminaries and bible schools in the East-China Area merged together to form NJUTS in Nov. 1952, with K.H. Ting as her president. With the addition of Yenching Union Theological Seminary in Beijing in 1961, there were 12 members in the school’s alliance. The schooling at NJUTS was suspended due to the Cultural Revolution in 1966, and was resumed in Feb. 1981, with Bishop K. H. Ting serving as the president. In March 2010, the board of directors of NJUTS nominated Bishop K. H. Ting as the Honorary President, Rev. Gao Feng as the President, Rev. Chen Yilu as the Executive Vice-President, and Rev. Wang Aiming as the Vice-President. There are 22 full-time teachers, among whom, three have received PhD’s, and five are studying for PhD’s in seminaries overseas. Also, there are currently 310 undergraduate and graduate students, 53 pastoral graduate students, and 1,000 part-time students. The new campus is situated at No. 100 Qiaoge Road, Jiangning, Nanjing, Jiangsu.
NJUTS has four Educational Programs. Firstly, the four-year full-time undergraduate program enrolls students with education of high school or higher. Its students are awarded undergraduate diploma after completing all courses and passing all examinations, and as well be qualified to apply for bachelor’s degree. Secondly, the three-year full-time graduate program enrolls students graduated from seminaries or universities. Students are awarded graduate diploma after completing all courses and passing all examinations, and as well be qualified to apply for the degree of Master Divinity. Thirdly, the part-time pastoral postgraduate program enrolls pastors from all over China who have already worked in church for several years. The program lasts for two and half years with four weeks' intensive courses each semester. The students are awarded pastoral-graduate diploma after completing all courses and passing examinations. Fourthly, the three-year correspondence program enrolls students with education from junior high school. Students are awarded the correspondence certificate after completing all courses and passing all examinations.
The curriculum is set primarily on theology related courses with humanity courses as the complement, which respectively share the ratio of 70% and 30%. The former one is classified into four categories: Biblical Studies, Theological Studies, Church History Studies and Practice Studies. As for the plan for teaching, the seminary emphasizes on both learning and cultivating, while more on learning. As for promotion of spirituality, it encourages students to value individual devotion, morning and afternoon worship in weekdays and worship on Sunday mornings. Under the direction of Student Union and Ministry Committee for Students, various fellowships initiated by students spontaneously to fill into the leisure time have been enriching the school life and enhancing the communion between brothers and sisters.
NJUTS is the only one national seminary, enrolling student throughout the country. Since its reopening in 1981, it has been shouldering the responsibility of nurturing teachers for its peers and researchers for CCC/TSPM at all levels. Influenced by elder generations, NJUTS has an academic tradition of emphasis on both teaching and research. Its main activities may be listed as follows. Firstly, it initiates a variety of seminars, symposiums and secondly it invites famous scholars domestic and overseas to lecture. Besides, it encourages and supports teachers to participate in symposiums organized by academia. Moreover, it is also eager for publishing literatures on theology, especially, the research output made by teachers of NJUTS while teaching. The regular publication includes Jinling Theological Review and Teaching Materials. The former is an academic journal while the later is for all the volunteers in churches in the grassroots.
As an outstanding seminary at home and abroad, NJUTS, is also the only seminary in China that has the privilege to employ foreign teachers. In line with the principle of independence, NJUTS promotes active academic and theological exchange, and receives famous leaders, scholars, and church members from all around the world. Our theological understandings and friendships are enhanced by various channels of communication and exchanges through the forms of colloquium, symposium and seminars, etc. For example, we successfully presented The Eighth Advanced Forum on the Function of Christianity in Modern China. In addition, NJUTS also sends teachers abroad for further education, for visits, and to attend international Christian conferences. All of these efforts initiated by NJUTS have extended NJUTS' influence and have made known the policy of religious freedom, while simultaneously broadening students' minds and stimulating their enthusiasm. In a word, active external exchanges have played a great role in winning wide understanding and support from Christians throughout the world, in improving the educational quality of the seminary, and in enhancing academic research as well.
The old campus, situated in Dajianyin, Gulou, Nanjing, covering an area of less than 30 mu (1 mu=0.0667 hectares), could only accommodate 200 students at best, which made it unable to adapt to new church developments after entering the new epoch. However, with the support of the Party and government departments at all levels, 200 mu in the university town in Jiangning District was allocated to us as the realm of our new campus, accompanied by some economic support. With all of this help and support, the groundbreaking ceremony of the new campus was held in Jan. 17th, 2005, which formally signaled the construction. The classes were moved to this new campus in March, 2009. NJUTS aims to enroll 500 students by gradually broadening its enrollment scale.
During these 60 years, nearly 2000 students have graduated from NJUTS, 46 of whom resettled overseas while all of the others serve on the first line of the Chinese church, playing a significant role in promoting the sound development of the Chinese church and social stability.
With the support of the government, the guidance of national CCC & TSPM, and the great efforts made by the whole faculty and all of the Christians nationwide, NJUTS has achieved abundant accomplishments in the sense of nurturing students who have an integrated development in spiritual, moral, intellectual, physical and social domain by following the teaching principles drafted by Bishop K.H. Ting, and also by insisting on the Three-Self principle to love one's church and love one's country.
In regard to future prospects, all of the faculty and students of NJUTS are deeply confident that God, who began a good work here, will bring it to completion.
God bless NJUTS! May more brilliant servants of God be nurtured by NJUTS for churches and the whole society!
